Any repair information is intended for professional repair shops only.

Users of Freeplay equipment should not attempt any repair which involves any disassembly. Some of our older products were driven by powerful springs which, if allowed to unwind in an uncontrolled manner, would be dangerous and could cause injury. Never remove covers from such devices.

This product has been discontinued and is no longer supported. We do not carry out any repairs

Using the winding handle, my radio seems to only work on FM not on DAB.

From a 60 second wind, the DAB will only work for about 3-5 mins. (normal volume) whereas the FM should work for an hour (normal volume) for the same winding time.

The radio will not charge or play from the charger. However, it does work with the winder. The charger does work with other products.

The DC socket is faulty.

What are the battery pack specifications for the Devo?

7.2v Ni-MH AA 2000mAh. It will need to be soldered onto the PCB.

How many minutes do you have to wind for to get 1 hour of DAB listening?

Approximately 20 mins for 1 hour DAB listening. It does not have to be done all at once though; rests can be taken in between. AC charging is best when available.

The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore; do I need to replace it?

Rechargeable batteries deteriorate over time, especially if drained nearly completely (to extend the life of your battery, limit how often that happens). However, in many cases they can be "conditioned" back to life. This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles followed by a full charge with the adapter. Alternatively this can be done by letting the product run from the battery until it stops, and then, with the product turned off, fully charging it using the wall adapter.

The DAB stops working after a few minutes even though it is plugged in continually at the mains.

The AC adaptor will always run the unit even if the battery is flat. Check to see that there is a charging indication (green light), to ensure that the adapter is correctly plugged in and not faulty.

Having followed the instructions, the radio’s internal battery fails to charge from the mains and thus we are unable to listen unless the system is remained plugged in. The wind up operation does work.

Try and wind the radio vigorously for 1 min followed by an AC charge for 10 hours and see if the radio plays. Please note that the radio will not run from the battery if the AC adaptor is physically plugged into the radio but the mains is switched off i.e. If you want to play the radio just from the batteries ensure that the adapter is not plugged in too.

What are the adapter specifications?

It is 9v 500mA with a regulated output.

The DAB mode (whether running off the battery or the mains) on the radio stops working and the display freezes. This usually happens after an hour or so and, if left switched off, it will eventually turn on again.

It seems like a faulty DAB module. Try and wind vigorously 10 times for 30-60 seconds at a time and follow it by a full wall charge. Do not switch the radio on at all during this charging. Then use the radio again.

When I wind my radio it starts to make a grinding noise.

There may be some dirt in the gears/ cogs. You will need to disassemble to check. Another suggestion is that there could be dirt inside the alternator - pull the rotor cup off and take a look inside. The alternator is the cream/ beige looking cog. Pull the metal part off the cream part. It isn’t very easy to pull off as the magnets are strong but it will come off.

The panel illuminates but there is no station info therefore making DAB scan and station selection a problem.FM is fine. Everything else works though so it’s just a faulty display.

The problem could either be a bad solder joint which is easily reparable by an electrical repair shop or it could be the display module.

Where can I purchase a replacement aerial?

The Devo is no longer supported. Take the radio and the remains of the aerial to a radio components supplier (RS components is one) and to match by diameter and length of antenna.

My radio will no longer charge or play from the adapter. The charging indicator no longer illuminates.

The problem lies with either the DC socket connection or the charger. If you can test the charger on another product or test another charger on the radio, this will determine which one is fault

Where can I find the instruction manual?

Download Devo instructional manual here.
