Planning ahead may help keep you and your car from getting stuck on the cold shoulder this winter. Most importantly, have the car serviced as often as the manufacturer recommends. In addition, in the fall: Have the radiator system serviced, and check the antifreeze level. Add antifreeze if needed. Replace windshield wiper fluid with a wintertime mixture. Check the air pressure in your tires. During the winter, it's a good idea to keep the gas tank near full to help avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. To further help your car survive the winter, experts recommend keeping the following items in the glove compartment and trunk: Blankets First aid kit A can and waterproof matches (to melt snow for water) Windshield scraper Booster cables Road maps Compass Tool kit Paper towels Bag of sand or cat litter (to pour on ice or snow for added traction) Tire chains (in areas with heavy snow) Collapsible shovel High-calorie canned or dried foods and a can opener Canned compressed air with sealant (for emergency tire repair) Brightly colored cloth Reliable flashlight. For example, the Freeplay Self Powered Lantern delivers emergency light anytime, anywhere, without batteries. For each 30-second wind, the lantern provides three to six minutes of light. Or, when its NiCd battery is fully charges (through the 12-volt AC/DC adapter), it can shine for up to two hours. The unit also features a flashing beacon light for emergencies, and can act as a stand-alone generator - powering any devices that run on two AA batteries. The Freeplay Self Powered products can be found at The Sports Authority, Sharper Image, Restoration Hardware and other national retailers, or by calling (800) WIND-234.
