Power Source – Self-Charge

Direct drive spur gear transmission running with no lubrication or grease driving a high power 3-phase alternator with high efficiency 3-phase rectification (total system efficiency of 70%).

Alternator

  • 6 pole pair of Zinc coated sintered Neodymium Iron Boron permanent magnets (N35H Grade).
  • 3-phase winding.
  • Skewed stator tooth faces to reduce cogging torque while retaining high efficiency.
  • Stator laminations 0.5mm laminating steel to specification VM 350-50, double side insulated to Stabolit 20
  • Permanently lubricated sintered Oilite bush for long life.
  • Stainless steel base plate for non-magnetism, corrosion resistance, and strength.

Transmission and Winder

  • Un-lubricated and un-greased direct drive spur gears preventing wear from buildup of dust ingress.
  • Spur gears are manufactured in dissimilar engineering polymers - glass filled PA6 (nylon) and POM (acetyl) for optimum gear tooth interface and extended life.
  • Sintered Oilite bushes and stainless steel shafts for extended life.
  • Lengthened winder handle for easy winding by all ages.
  • Large winder knob for easy grip
  • Transmission bushes are permanently lubricated oil-filled sintered brass (Oilite)
  • Winder hub and bush are nylon and acetyl respectively for long life
  • Winder handle is high strength glass filled nylon

Power Source – Solar Panel

Latched and magnetically adhered, detachable solar panel with 2.1-metre nylon filament reinforced cord.

  • Polycrystalline 5V 52mA (@ 95,000 lux) solar panel.
  • Solar panel output under normal direct sunlight conditions is sufficient to power radio output and trickle charge internal battery pack simultaneously. In the event that the battery pack is absent, faulty, or dead, the solar panel will continue to power the radio normally while exposed to sunlight.
  • Solar panel is encased in UV stable polycarbonate and ABS shell for high impact resistance and toughness
  • Easily detached and placed in favorable position for solar power, allowing the user to enjoy solar function from a shaded position
  • Integral 2.1-metre cord. Cord reinforced with nylon filament for durability and strength.

Power Storage

  • High conversion efficiency rechargeable NiMH 3 cell AA 3.6V pack, 1300 mAh capacity.
  • Cell suppliers licensed by Ovonic, the holders of the NiMH patent
  • Easily replaceable with any 3 cell NiMH pack using Molex plug #5264-N
  • Easily removable for safe disposal
  • Radio will still function when cranked with absent, faulty, or dead battery-pack, but will cease to play when cranking stops. The radio will not be damaged under these conditions.
  • Radio will still function when exposed to sun with absent, faulty, or dead battery pack, but will cease to play when removed from sunlight. The radio will not be damaged under these conditions.

Speaker

A 4-inch, 5 W (max), 8-ohm weather resistant paper cone loudspeaker

  • Large durable cone for good power input to sound output ratio
  • Gives clear, loud, and undistorted sound for listening groups of up to 40 persons

Antenna

User replaceable 680mm flexible steel wire antenna (not telescopic).

  • Simple wire antenna
  • Easily replaceable with any length of wire or metallic cord in the event of breakage or loss
  • Nickel plated mild steel wire seated in a nickel plated brass base tube

    • FM 88-108 MHz

Tuning Mechanism, Band Switch and Dial Scale

  • Planetary drive to electronic tuning system for strength, long life, reliability and smoothness, and is far superior to lines, internal guide rails, or strings
  • Planetary drive also gives accurate and easy tuning with high gear ratio.
  • Easily readable tuning pointer and large color coded dial scale
  • Four position band switch corresponds directly to color coded bands on dial scale
  • All materials UV-stabilized
  • ABS gears for smooth running and durability.
  • Special inks on dial scale for color retention and UV resistance
  • Dial scale lens is scratch resistant hi impact polycarbonate

Transmission casing

  • Thick walls with multiple screw fasteners for strength and secure location.
