Lifetime and Durability

Alternator

  • Tested to 60W continuous power output without failure. Normal operating spec in radio is 4 – 8 W. The result is that the alternator life is increased due to lower heat build up, and reduced bush and gear wear.

Gearbox and winding mechanism

  • Tested to 500 000 handle input turns without failure. This is equivalent to about 10 years of use, with one hour of listening per day, every day.

Power storage

  • Battery pack tested to 10 000 listening cycles with less than 10% capacity degradation. A single listening cycle is defined as 30 seconds of winding of the winder handle at 140 rpm, followed by medium volume listening until the battery charge is exhausted (typically more than 30 minutes listening). 10 000 listening cycles is therefore equivalent to a minimum of 5 000 hours of listening.

Casing

  • Drop tested to 48 inches without breakage
  • Drop tested to 60 inches without functional loss
  • Splash tested (direct water spray) without damage or functional loss
  • Sand and dust tested without damage or functional loss
  • Exposure tested for 4 weeks under strong sunlight and 48 hours of direct rain without damage or functional loss
