Do I need to do anything before I use it?
For best results, the battery requires a conditioning charge before first use, or after long periods without use.  This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles.  Alternatively this can be done by fully charging the battery using the wall adapter (if you have one).  The product can, however, be used immediately in the wind-up mode if required.
How long will a fully charged battery retain its charge?
The battery will retain about 75% of its capacity after 1 month, 55% after 2 months, 40% after 3 months and 15% after 6 months.
Can I over-wind the unit - does it ever stop you from winding?
No, you cannot over-wind the internal mechanism.  It consists of simple gearing which drives the alternator, providing power to the internal battery.
Will I damage the product if I crank the handle in the opposite direction?
No, the winder handle can be cranked in both directions.
What are the main benefits of listening via DAB?
DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is a new transmission system that brings all the benefits of digital broadcasting to the world of radio.  DAB gives you:
  • Far wider station choice
  • Better reception & clarity of sound
  • 'One-touch' re-tuning with no frequencies to remember
  • Dynamic text information which tells you what and who you are listening to.
How can I find out if I am covered by DAB stations?
Please check your postcode at: www.digitalradionow.com to see what stations you can listen to in your area.  Or use your mobile phone and text "DAB" followed by your postcode to find out the stations available to you.
What is the frequency of the DAB stations?
Band III: 174.928–239.2 MHz
Will I be able to pick up DAB services outside of the UK?
It depends on which country you are in.  The following countries transmit in Band III:  Belgium, Denmark, Holland, Hong Kong (China), Italy, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
How long does it take to fully charge the battery?
Using the wall adapter, it will take about 20 hours to fully charge the battery.
Is the Devo waterproof?
No.  The Devo must not be exposed to wet rainy conditions.
Why is it named Devo?
Freeplay Energy plc is committed to a world of responsible energy.  This commitment extends beyond the environmental impact mitigation of our products to the sustainable provision of energy in developing communities and humanitarian initiatives.  The names we choose for our products tell some of our stories:
Conflict has a devastating impact on communities, families and individuals and the effects of violence remain long after the conflict has passed.  Survivors are left to start over, unprepared to re-build their lives in the wake of the destruction which has destroyed their communities and often left them displaced and disenfranchised, adding to the almost insurmountable challenge of returning to a normal life.  Radio can reach those isolated by conflict and provide knowledge and practical life skills to build safe and sustainable communities.  Information is key to those who have been displaced and brings much needed news from home, announces deliveries of food and medical supplies and assists to successfully repatriate families – but without electricity and with no money to buy batteries, the opportunity to rebuild their lives is lost.  Freeplay’s self powered Lifeline radio, which needs no electricity or batteries, solves the problem of access.  The refugee camps in Western Tanzania are just one legacy of the longstanding conflict in Central Africa.  In one such camp is Devotte, a young Burundian woman is a refugee displaced by the on-going civil conflict – and the inspiration for the name of the Freeplay Devo DAB and FM radio.  Devotte was the first ever recipient of Freeplay Energy plc’s Lifeline radio, a multi-band, self-powered radio designed specifically for providing dependable access to information across a broad range of humanitarian projects.

Robustly engineered to operate in the harshest of rural conditions, it is rugged, and easy to operate.  The Lifeline self-powered radio ensures sustainable access to radio to those most in need.

There is a long road ahead for Devotte, but the Lifeline can improve the quality of her life.  The Lifeline radio offers her, and others like her, hope for a more secure future, with practical help and information and a reliable link to the outside world.

Where can I find the instruction manual?
Can I leave it plugged in all the time?
Yes; the charging current is designed to be low enough to be non-damaging if left
on charge continuously.  (Unplugging may extend the life of the battery, but note that repeated deep discharges will shorten it.)
The battery doesn't hold a charge any more; do I need to replace it?
Rechargeable batteries deteriorate over time, especially if drained nearly completely (to extend the life of your battery, limit how often that happens).  However, in many cases they can be "conditioned" back to life.  This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles.  Alternatively this can be done by letting the product run from the battery until it stops, and then, with the product turned off, fully charging it using the wall adapter.
